The phylogenetic distribution of urea metabolism in bacteria is broad and sporadic. The urease system (GenProp0051, blue circles) and the urea carboxylase/allophanate hydrolase pathway (GenProp0481, green circles) are plotted on the AMPHORA inferred phylogenetic tree of prokaryotes from Eisen & Wu[24]. Certain archaeal species also metabolize urea and are not shown (although they were included in the analyses).
