Projection of the phenotypic data onto its first and second principal components. Points are colored by the total number of amino acid substitutions relative to the consensus B WT sequence, according to the scale at right; a mixture at a position (including those containing the WT amino acid) is counted as one substitution. The phenotypes and genotypes of selected sequences are indicated. The 9-digit shorthand phenotypic code used to describe the sequences indicates the resistance score (Table 2) to each of the 9 PIs in the order shown in Fig. 1: RTV, NFV, ATV, APV, IDV, LPV, SQV, TPV, DRV. All "outlying" sequences are fully listed in Supplementary Information (Fig. S4, Additional File 1).
