(a) Number of large gene families (F large ) against total number of gene families (F tot ) in the genomes of 92 Bacteria (■) and 79 Archaea (◦), both clustered at E cut = 1e-20 and f min = 0.7. Analysis of variance showed a significant effect of F tot on F large (F(1, 167) = 1181.8, p ≪ 0.001) but not of taxa group. The least-squared linear regression is thus shown for the combined Bacteria and Archaea dataset (solid line, F large = –35.4 + 0.0298 × F tot ); the x-intercept for this line is at F tot = 1186.
