There are 4 possible ways of deleting a nucleotide amongst 4 nucleotides and 10 possible combinations of deleting two nucleotides amongst 5. There are 3 possible ways of inserting one and two nucleotides. However, given that the inserted nucleotide α ∈ {T,A,C,G}, there 10 non-overlapping triplets (4 + 3 + 3) for the single insert and 37 (4² + 4 x 3 + 3²) for the double insert.
