Two datasets X and Y (100 data points) show a hypothetical dependency f(x) = 4x(1 - x) (top). The Pearson correlation coefficient is not able to detect a significant correlation as shown in the histogram plot of the dataset compared to 300 realisations of shuffled data (left). Mutual information clearly shows that the two datasets are not statistically independent (right).
