Insulin receptor recycling model. The insulin molecule can bind to a free receptor (Bind_Insulin) which leads to the autophosphorylation and activation of the IR (Phos_IR_I). The active receptor can be deactivated in the membrane (Dephos_IR_I_P) or internalized (Inter_IR_I_P) into cytosol where it is deactivated (Dephos_IR_I_P_Int). Insulin is degraded in the cytosol, and the free receptor can either be transported back to the membrane (Deinter_IR) or be degraded. The internal receptor pool is maintained by the synthesis of new IR.
