Mappings between recognition helices. All possible mappings of two recognition helices are shown schematically, where each recognition helix is represented by a series of squares. The longer recognition helix is held fixed, and is always oriented from the N- to the C-terminus. The shorter recognition helix is allowed to slide along the longer helix, as long as a minimum of 8 residues are overlap-ping between the two helices. The orientation of the shorter helix can also be flipped. Acceptable mappings are shown in green, and an unacceptable mapping is shown in pink
