Partial duplication TDRL and a corresponding TDRL that achieves the same circular output permutation [(1 2 4 6 3 5 7 8)]∼. Notation is as in Fig. 1. The left-hand side shows a partial tandem duplication of the sequence 3 4 5 6 of [(1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8)]∼ followed by a subsequent loss of the elements 3 and 5 in the first copy, and 4 and 6 in the second copy, i.e., F ′={4,6}, S ′={3,5}, and the elements of N={1,2,7,8} are not duplicated. The same rearrangement can be achieved by the TDRL (F,S,p), where F=S ′, S=N∪F ′, and p=7 is the unique non-duplicated element adjacent to the second copy. The corresponding TDRL ({3,5},{1,2,4,6,7,8},7) is illustrated on the right-hand side
