Left: Two peaks are too close to be resolved by the KDE. This reference is correctly discarded because of the large dispersion around the regression spline. Right: in this case, the KDE can resolve the two close peaks. Here, the method correctly fits the spline on the points belonging to one of the peaks. After filtering the outliers, the dispersion is below the threshold
