Variance of allele balance calculated for 21 European race type isolates of B. lactucae. Contours calculated in Fig. 3 indicated that 12 isolates were homokaryotic. The other nine isolates are likely heterokaryotic and fall within contours calculated for heterokaryons. Bold-faced labels indicate 13 isolates for which the heterokaryotic condition was not previously known. Plain-faced labels indicate isolates for which histograms of allele balance have been reported [4]; these isolates were used to generate Fig. 3.
