Both matrices contain rows representing the same samples, but ssPA transforms the columns of the original matrix representing individual molecular measurements (in this example metabolites) into pathways. An ssPA algorithm is used to perform the pathway transformation, taking the input metabolomics matrix (left) alongside a set of pathways as input. Pathway logos shown correspond to KEGG, Reactome, and MetaCyc databases, which are examples of where pathway sets can be obtained
