Workflow of model development. Answering a biological question using data-driven mechanistic modeling requires at least four essential steps: collection of measurement data (left, bottom); derivation of ODE model (left, top); estimation of the parameters of the ODE model using the measurement data (middle); and analysis of the fitted model, including the parameter and prediction uncertainties (right). Depending on the complexity of the problem, theses steps have to be iterated.
