In this graph, represented twice, a conjugate flow \(\hat f\) is represented with the edge colors. On red edges, \(\hat f = 1\), on blue edges \(\hat f = -1\). There are exactly two ways of decomposing this conjugate flow as a sum of synchronized and nested alternating weightings, as indicated by the circular arrows. Transforming the righthand decomposition into the lefthand one requires simultaneous modifications of all flows
