From: Metabolic flux balance analysis and the in silico analysis of Escherichia coli K-12 gene deletions

Figure 1

Growth phenotypes of in silico deletion strains; maximal biomass yields on glucose for all possible single gene deletions in central intermediary metabolism. The environmental variables (uptake rate/external metabolic fluxes) are set to correspond to a point within each of the phases of the wild-type PhPP (figure inset). The maximal yields were calculated using flux-balance analysis with the objective of maximizing the growth flux. The biomass yields are normalized with respect to the results for the full metabolic genotype. The α and β value for the constraints on the external fluxes for glucose and oxygen uptake are defined as follows (units- mmole g-1 hr-1): Phase 1 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 23; LO - v gic = 10, v oxy = 20.3; Phase 2 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 17; Phase 3 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 12; Phase 4 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 8; Phase 5 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 3; Phase 6 - v glc = 10, v oxy = 0.
