Protein timeseries generated using Gillespie's algorithm for the simple A and autoregulatory B models of single gene expression with added measurement error ( = 9). Initial conditions for mRNA and protein were sampled from Poisson distributions with means equal to the stationary means of the system with equal constant transcription rate b4. In the autoregulatory case we set H = b4k P /2γ R γ P . In each panel 20 time series are presented. The deterministic and average trajectories are plotted in bold black and red lines respectively. Corresponding mRNA trajectories (not used for inference) are presented in Additional file 1.
