Glucose is catabolised into pyruvate. Under anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is degraded to formic acid (formate), which is either expelled (via transporters), or further degraded into H2 and CO2. The reactions for these processes were up-regulated whereas the biosynthesis and degradation of costly compounds were down-regulated (folate and 10-formyl-THF, respectively).
