Variance of allele balance calculated for 40 isolates of P. infestans. Panels represent the geographic location the isolate was collected from as reported in other studies [5, 25]. Isolates previously described inconsistent with diploidy (triangles) had higher variance of allele balance than isolates consistent with diploidy (circles). Variance values calculated for most isolates fell within the contours defined for B. lactucae (Fig. 3)
